Rara Lake (नेपाली: रारा ताल) is the largest freshwater lake in Nepal and one of the country's most breathtaking natural wonders. Located in Mugu District of Karnali Province inside Rara National Park, this pristine alpine lake is often called the "Queen of Lakes" because of its crystal-clear blue water, peaceful surroundings, and untouched natural beauty.

I had the opportunity to visit Rara Lake in October 2024, starting my journey from Pokhara. October is considered one of the best times to visit because the weather is stable, the skies are crystal clear, and the mountain views are spectacular. The forests surrounding the lake become vibrant after the monsoon, making the landscape even more beautiful.

Rara Lake is famous for changing its color several times throughout the day depending on sunlight, weather, and the angle of reflection. During sunrise and sunset, the lake looks magical with shades of deep blue, emerald green, and turquoise.

My Journey to Rara Lake from Pokhara (October 2024)

I began my trip from Pokhara in October 2024, which turned out to be the perfect season for visiting Rara Lake.

The weather remained clear throughout most of the journey, allowing us to enjoy spectacular views of hills, rivers, forests, and Himalayan landscapes. Since October comes after the monsoon season, the roads were in better condition than during the rainy months, and nature looked incredibly fresh and green.

Although the journey was long, every kilometer offered a new landscape and unforgettable memories.

How to Reach Rara Lake from Pokhara

There are several ways to reach Rara Lake depending on your budget and available time.

Option 1: By Road (Most Popular)

Pokhara/Kathmandu → Baglung → Beni → Tatopani → (OR)( From Pokhara/Kathmandu to Nepalgunj) →Surkhet → Dailekh → Kalikot → Jumla → Nagma → Talcha → Rara Lake

This road trip takes approximately 2–3 days, depending on road conditions and overnight stops.

From Talcha, visitors usually walk or take the final trail into Rara National Park to reach the lakeshore.

Option 2: Flight + Trek

Pokhara → Kathmandu → Nepalgunj → Talcha Airport

After landing at Talcha Airport, it takes around 2–3 hours of hiking to reach the lake.

This is the fastest option but also more expensive.

Option 3: Bus and Jeep Combination

Many travelers take a bus from Pokhara toward Surkhet or Jumla and then continue by local jeep toward Talcha before hiking to the lake.

This is the most economical option but requires patience due to rough mountain roads.

Best Time to Visit Rara Lake

Autumn (September–November) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is considered the best season.

• Pleasant temperatures

• Green forests after the monsoon

• Perfect for photography

• Best trekking conditions

Since I visited in October 2024, I highly recommend this season.

Spring (March–May)

Another excellent time with blooming rhododendron forests and pleasant weather.

Winter (December–February)

Heavy snowfall may block some routes, and temperatures often fall below freezing.

Monsoon (June–August)

Frequent rainfall and landslides make travel difficult.

Why Rara Lake is Special

Rara Lake is unlike any other destination in Nepal.

Unlike busy tourist areas, Rara remains peaceful and less crowded. The lake is surrounded by pine, juniper, spruce, oak, and rhododendron forests. The calm environment allows visitors to truly connect with nature.

The lake changes color throughout the day, creating breathtaking scenery that photographers and nature lovers admire.

Murma Top is one of the best viewpoints near Rara Lake.

From here, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire lake, surrounding forests, snow-capped mountains, and peaceful valleys. Sunrise from Murma Top is one of the highlights of any Rara trip.

For me, traveling from Pokhara to Rara Lake in October 2024 was one of the most memorable adventures I've ever had. Every part of the journey.from winding mountain roads to the breathtaking first view of the lake—was worth the effort.
